A field trip...

We've been studying the characteristics of mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and Insects the past couple months.  It sounded like the perfect time to visit the fish hatchery to learn some more about salmon!  It was a first for me as well, so I'm happy to say Colten wasn't the only one learning on this visit!

Our tour was amazing!  We were lucky enough to join another homeschool group on this visit, most of which we already knew... how fun!

Um yeah... who knew we'd be getting a front row seat to some hatchery spawning...
WHOA!

A little shake of the eggs and a squirt of the sperm and wha la...

Fertilization in a bucket!

That's a couple eggs!

We witnessed the whole process...

Then an extrememly entertaining salmon lesson from this fella!

Yum!

Wow a swim bladder fully in tacked... *sighhhh* Amazing!

This guy wasn't as interested... he wanted to touch the guts, that's how he learns apparently!

Another break for Ben... he was hungry!

Next we did a fun activity... showing how salmon use their very sophisticated sense of smell to find their way home to spawn.

There's my little Salmon... trying to find his way down stream

Sniff sniff... hmmm does that smell like home?

"Now that's a lot a Chum..."
 - (If you've seen Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs... you get this)

What an amazing experience...
We can't wait to take Papa back to the hatchery!
