We had some AMAZING spring like days that left us with some spectacular sunsets!
Stunning!
Anything look odd to you?
A beast of an egg!
Our regular eggs are bigger than store bought large eggs...
That POOOR hen!
Some painting
Some artwork made for Nana Kathy and Bobbie of course!
Now just to mail them!
Sooo for some crazy reason the chickens around here are thinkin it's a good time to start going broody... this is what happens when you try to steal eggs from a broody hen.... OUCH that hurt!
I just don't have the heart to have roosters and not let these girls do what comes naturally... soooo yep we've got some sittin on eggs!
This is one of our "Babies" from last summer... yep not even a year old and she thinks she's ready to be a Mama!
Call us nuts but having broody hens is no simple task during the winter... it would be great to just leave them in the coop but for some bizarre reason other hens think they should climb on top of these broody girls and lay their eggs in the same nest... so without marking your eggs you'd never know the difference between the "set" eggs and freshly laid... besides who wants to fight the broody crazed Mom everyday anyways?!
So we moved our girls to our little brooders we made last year...
And because it's sooo chilly we manually remove them from the nest every couple of days so they can eat and drink and poo...(sorry TMI)
A dedicated mama will sometimes not leave the nest at all and this can end tragically...
So insane to watch a broody hen come out of her "broody trance"
Little Olives babes...
We're really crossing our fingers on these...
It's her second attempt...
and we've recently found her off the nest and some chilled eggs... but she's back on and we're due to hatch in just a few days...
Ben enjoying the sun while we let those Mama's stretch their legs...
This is the other Mama sittin...
She's the crazy one! Like really crazy! She will attack you if you get too close!
She's got the crazed look in her eyes... you know she'll make a great mom! haha
6 eggs in her little nest
It's like a little Chicken Complex
They were outside on top of my garden location... but then we found out snow and nights in the teens was in the forecast... so they needed to be relocated which was quite the endeavor with headlamps and homemade "coop moving apparatuses"
We love snow!
I was happy to be toasty inside while Papa constructed the snowman!
Nice... random animal bones on my front stoop... thanks Ben!
UGHHH BOYS!
Chilly Chicky Toes!
Ben was just havin a ball!
He cracks me up!
So fun to learn about Chickens with the boys!
We check our little chart each day, as those babies grow...
just a couple more days and there should be some little peeps!
It's been a great start to the month!
